faux fur - n. - Also known as "fake fur", "fun fur", "man-made fur" and "fur alternative". Usually made from acrylic and/or modacrylic, polyester, olefin, a handful of other man made materials.
There are not many differences in the faux fur being made around the world. One difference, however, is the process used to make a 'fabric' from the fibers. Another difference is how the fibers are attached to the chosen backing and the backing you've chosen! Generally, the fiber is made from acrylic, modacrylic, polyester, olefin and/or a handful of other types of man made chemicals. The backing ranges from cotton blends to bridal satin. Faux Fur began simply because of a "waste not, want not" mentality that tends to permeate industry. Can you blame them? Look at it this way - you just made a big pot of chemicals that are meant to be made into the 'strands of material' (or fibers) that might become a mop, but you always have some left over, so you look for a way to use the "leavings". Slightly alter the process for producing the fibers (to control size, look & consistency) and now you're ready to make something with it. You started making a mop, so how do you make something with this?? Well, mops are fibers woven into a backing to produce a mop head. Similarly, you take your new fiber weave it into a suitable backing for usage. Wow, now you have faux fur!! It's not quite that simple, but you should get the idea!
